President Meloni visits Kyiv

24 Febbraio 2024

On the second anniversary of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, today chaired a video-conference meeting of the G7 Heads of State and Government, the first under the Italian Presidency, from Kyiv. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, also spoke at the meeting.

This morning, President Meloni, together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the Prime Minister of Belgium and President-in-Office of the Council of the EU, Alexander De Croo, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, attended an honours ceremony for those who defended the airport of Hostomel, in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Later, after visiting the Memory Wall of Fallen Defenders, the leaders met at Mariinsky Palace, where they issued statements to the press.

President Meloni also had a bilateral meeting with the Ukrainian President, after which a security cooperation agreement was signed, in line with the commitments undertaken at G7 level during the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July 2023.
