The Maritime Republic Room

The ‘Sala delle Repubbliche Marinare’ [‘Maritime Republic Room’] is situated in the part of the palace that was built at a later date by the Chigi family, on exactly the opposite side to the Deti Gallery.

This room takes its name from the four large emblems of Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi that were painted onto the ceiling after the First World War, when Palazzo Chigi became home to the Ministry of Colonies.

This room is furnished with a large meeting table and is currently used as an antechamber to the office of the Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

The main decorative feature of this room is its beautiful grisailles (with monochrome chiaroscuro effects), fashionable at the start of the 19th century, depicting woodland landscapes.

The Maritime Republic Room leads to the staircase to the top floor, where the Chigiana Library is situated.
