7 April 2023

In accordance with the commitments made by the Government, relocation operations are ongoing for the survivors of the shipwreck that occurred in Cutro, in the province of Crotone, on the night of 25-26 February.
According to information gathered by the Ministry of the Interior, 76 people are requesting international protection: 18 have applied in Italy (15 Pakistani nationals, 2 Afghan nationals and 1 Iranian national) and are currently being housed in ‘Reception and Integration System’ (‘SAI’) centres; five unaccompanied foreign minors have been placed in facilities for children.
53 people applying for international protection in countries other than Italy (49 Afghan nationals, 2 Syrian nationals, 1 Iranian national and 1 Somali national) have joined the voluntary relocation programme, 14 of whom have departed of their own accord.
The German authorities have examined the position of another 39 individuals, admitting 33 to the relocation programme (29 Afghan nationals, 2 Syrian nationals, 1 Somali national and 1 Iranian national), 32 of whom left for Germany on 31 March, while one Afghan national will leave at a later date due to healthcare requirements. One person has refused to be moved to Germany, stating the intention to join a close relative in Ireland.

Following President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni’s meeting with survivors and relatives of the victims at Palazzo Chigi, the requests have been examined and brought to the attention of European institutions and partners, and the commitments made by the Government have been fulfilled.
