President Meloni’s statement on Italian Navy Day

10 June 2023

The Government expresses its gratitude to the men and women of the Italian Navy who serve our homeland, professionally and generously performing duties that are crucial for the nation and guaranteeing the security and defence of the Mediterranean, from the Balearics to the Turkish Straits. The Navy carries out strategic activities and responds to challenges that are being made increasingly difficult by the current international context and Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Being in the Navy requires great sacrifice. It very often means being at sea for long periods, even months at a time. Festivities are sometimes spent far from loved ones and being ready to leave, even at short notice, is a requirement. Sometimes it is easier, sometimes harder, but the choice the men and women of the Navy make is a choice of love. Italy’s credibility, stature and reliability in the world are underpinned also by our Navy personnel and this is something we are proud of. The Tricolour hoisted on our ships embodies the dedication and courage of those who wear the Navy uniform today, and indeed of those who have also served our homeland in arms in the past. Remembering them, my heartfelt thoughts go to all those, from all eras, who have lost their lives at sea. The Government’s thoughts are also with our servicepeople’s families and loved ones, without whom the men and women of the Navy would not be able to carry out their mission.

On this day of celebration for the Navy, the Government would like to extend special wishes to the cadets who have completed the ‘first class’ of the Livorno Naval Academy and to the crew of the glorious Amerigo Vespucci training ship, which is preparing to tour the world and take our Tricolour to five continents, making an extraordinary contribution to promoting Italian values, culture and excellence.

Italy is and remains the most beautiful ship in the world. The sea she is called upon to sail will not always be tranquil. There will be waves and strong winds, but also periods of calm. One thing, however, will remain key: always keeping a straight course and not being afraid, ready to manage any situation, make the most of events and turn crises into opportunities.

Long live the Navy!
Long live Italy!
