Large amounts of electrical equipment to be sent to Ukraine

20 February 2023

The ‘Ukraine electricity emergency’ working group, which was strongly desired by President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni, has arranged for electrical equipment worth millions of euro to arrive in Ukraine over the coming days. The working group is coordinated by Undersecretaries of State Alfredo Mantovano and Giovanbattista Fazzolari and is made up of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, together with the Civil Protection Department and Terna, Italy’s national electricity grid operator. The aim of this initiative is to provide Ukraine with specific support to address the electricity shortages being endured by the people as a result of the ongoing conflict and the serious destruction of infrastructure caused by the bombings.
Around ten days ago, large amounts of electrical equipment (transformers and generators of various sizes, electrical cables and accessories) began to be sent to Ukraine, thanks also to the valuable logistics work carried out by the Civil Protection Department, using specific international corridors for the shipment. This equipment will soon be available to the Ukrainian Government to try and restore a stable energy supply. Approximately three million people could potentially benefit from this operation. This shipment is only an initial part of the work that will now continue. The working group based at Palazzo Chigi will indeed continue monitoring the population’s needs and assessing the best way to ensure further concrete assistance arrives.
