Mr Secretary General, Mr President of the General Assembly, dear delegates, ladies and gentlemen. Good afternoon to all of you.

First of all I want to wish the best of luck to Riyadh and Busan for their candidatures, and I want to bring a warm thank to my colleagues who have just spoken, the Promoting Committee, the testimonials who have shared their experiences, the young Gaia! 

I am truly honoured to be here today to convey to you how much Italy, Italians - all of us - believe in the candidature of Rome to host the Expo 2030. It is a challenge that our Nation, at all levels, is pursuing with great enthusiasm.

I am thrilled to be here to talk to you about Rome. It is the eternal city, it is the Capital of Italy, it is the city where I was born. A fundamental part of my deep-rooted identity, and identity is indeed the most precious thing that belongs to each and every one of us. 

For this reason, and many more, I hope to be successful, in this difficult and exciting task that I have today: to convince you. To convince you to choose Italy, Rome, to host the World Expo in 2030, the year in which we will assess the results of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The year which will mark the centenary of the Bureau International des Expositions.

I could speak about what Rome has represented in the past and what it represents today.

I could tell you that it is the universal city by excellence, the first megalopolis in history, that has lived, and continues to live by constantly regenerating itself.

I could remind you that Rome is the capital of dialogue among the great monotheistic religions; that it is home to dozens of international organizations; that it is a global city and has been so for thousands of years. 

I could reiterate that it is a capital of culture, one of the world’s biggest university hubs and home to the largest university in Europe as well as to cutting-edge research and technology centers. A city with an ancient heart, that beats to the rhythm of history - a history in which it has been and is an absolute key player.

But what I am going to tell you instead, is that these specific characteristics, the combination of ancient roots and technological modernity, are the ones that inspired our project and give substance to our proposal. We believe that, since its beginnings, the World Expo has always been much more than a world exhibition: it is the story of an era and the imaginary design of the next. Expos chart a course and Rome intends to do the very same.

“People and Territories: Regeneration, Inclusion and Innovation” is the theme of the Rome Expo. It means people and their rights at its heart, integrating with their surrounding environment.

Sustainability, lasting partnerships between Nations, responsible and inclusive cooperation with the most vulnerable, an ambitious legacy of progress for the international community. These are the cornerstones of our project. These are the reasons to choose Rome. 

We are proposing to all our partners to show together that it is possible to build a larger scale project without spoiling the land. This is why our exhibition site will be innovative and completely sustainable: it will be the largest solar park ever to be built in a city. Each pavilion will produce clean energy, feeding into the shared grid.

We are proposing that Nations work together on concrete projects until 2030, to demonstrate how the international community can grow by working together in the collective interest. I am referring to lasting and sustainable partnerships.

In Rome, every Nation will find its own space, as an equal among equals, and has the chance to showcase its identity. No matter how big or small you may be, in Rome we know that everyone has something unique to offer and we want them to contribute on a level playing field. In our view, this is the essence of a responsible and inclusive cooperation. This is why we are ready to take action to ensure equal opportunities, also from a financial standpoint, for the widest possible participation in our World Expo.

Furthermore, the Rome Expo will not end after its six-month display. The pavilions will remain available to all Nations who request it, to enable them to keep a representation of themselves, to establish research and technology centers, to preserve a window of dialogue.

Our legacy, the legacy of the World Expo in Italy, aims to build a pathway to progress for the international community; to show our goals for the millennium can be achieved, that they are not just words and that the relationship between people and their environment can be really improved by working together.

Choosing to host World Expo 2030 in Rome means choosing all of this. 

One of the most intellectual minds of all time, Wolfgang Goethe, wrote that, in Rome, “the entire history of the world is interwoven”.

Choose Rome, let’s bring together history in the future!

Signor Segretario Generale, Signor Presidente dell’Assemblea generale, cari delegati, signore e signori, buon pomeriggio a tutti.
Prima di tutto voglio augurare buona fortuna a Riyadh e Busan per le loro candidature, e voglio portare un caloroso ringraziamento ai colleghi che mi hanno preceduto, al Comitato promotore, ai testimonial che hanno condiviso le loro esperienze, alla piccola Gaia!

Sono davvero onorata di essere qui oggi per raccontarvi quanto l’Italia, gli Italiani - noi tutti - crediamo nella candidatura di Roma ad ospitare l’Esposizione universale del 2030. È una sfida che la nostra Nazione, in tutte le sue articolazioni, sta portando avanti con grande entusiasmo.
E’ emozionante per me essere qui a parlarvi di Roma. È la Città Eterna, è la Capitale d’Italia, è la città nella quale sono nata. Un tratto fondamentale della mia identità profonda. E l’identità è la cosa più preziosa che ciascuno di noi ha.
Per questo, e per molto altro, spero di riuscire, oggi, in questo compito difficile ed entusiasmante che ho: convincervi. Convincervi a scegliere l’Italia, Roma, come sede dell’Expo del 2030, l’anno in cui valuteremo i risultati dei Sustainable Development Goals delle Nazioni Unite. L’anno che segnerà il centenario del Bureau International des Expositions.
Potrei parlare di ciò che Roma ha rappresentato nel passato e rappresenta nel presente.
Potrei dirvi che è la città universale per eccellenza, la prima megalopoli della storia, che ha vissuto e vive rigenerandosi costantemente.
Potrei ricordare che Roma è la capitale del dialogo tra le grandi religioni monoteiste; che è sede di decine di organizzazioni internazionali; che è una città globale, da millenni.
Potrei ribadire che è una capitale della cultura, uno dei più grandi poli universitari a livello mondiale, che ospita la più grande università d’Europa e centri di ricerca e tecnologia d’avanguardia. Città dal cuore antico, che batte al ritmo della storia e che della storia è stata ed è protagonista assoluta.
Ma vi dirò, invece, che sono proprio queste caratteristiche, la combinazione tra radici antiche e modernità tecnologica, ad ispirare il nostro progetto e a dare sostanza alla nostra proposta. Perché crediamo che l’Expo fin dalle origini è sempre stata molto più di un’Esposizione universale: è il racconto di un’epoca e il disegno immaginario di quella successiva. Le Expo tracciano una rotta e Roma non intende essere da meno.
“Persone e Territori: Rigenerazione, Inclusione e Innovazione” è il tema dell’Expo di Roma. Dove la persona e i suoi diritti rimangono al centro, integrandosi con l’ambiente che le circonda. 
Sostenibilità, partnerships durevoli tra le Nazioni, cooperazione responsabile e inclusiva con i più deboli, una legacy ambiziosa di progresso da lasciare alla comunità internazionale. Questi sono i cardini del nostro progetto. Questi sono i motivi per scegliere Roma. 
Proponiamo a tutti i nostri partners di dimostrare insieme che si può costruire un progetto su larga scala senza rovinare il territorio. Per questo, il nostro sito espositivo sarà innovativo e completamente sostenibile: sarà il più grande parco solare mai costruito in una città. Ogni padiglione produrrà energia pulita e la immetterà nella rete condivisa.
Proponiamo alle Nazioni di lavorare insieme da qui al 2030 su progetti concreti, per dimostrare come la comunità internazionale può crescere lavorando insieme nell’interesse collettivo. Mi riferisco a partnerships durevoli e sostenibili.
A Roma ogni nazione troverà il suo spazio, da eguale tra eguali, con la possibilità di raccontare la propria identità. Non importa quanto grandi o piccoli si sia, a Roma sappiamo che ognuno ha qualcosa di unico da dare e vogliamo che ognuno contribuisca su un piano di parità. È questa, secondo noi, l’essenza di una cooperazione di tipo responsabile e inclusivo. Per questo, siamo pronti a intervenire per garantire pari opportunità, anche finanziarie, per la più ampia partecipazione alla nostra Esposizione universale.
E l’Expo di Roma non finirà dopo i sei mesi della sua durata. I padiglioni rimarranno a disposizione di ogni Nazione che lo vorrà, per consentire loro di mantenere una testimonianza di loro stesse, di creare centri di ricerca e tecnologia, di conservare una finestra di dialogo. 
La nostra legacy, quella dell’Expo in Italia, vuole costruire un percorso di progresso per la comunità internazionale; dimostrare che i nostri obiettivi per il millennio possono essere realizzati, che non sono solo parole e che il rapporto tra le persone e il loro ambiente si può davvero migliorare lavorando insieme.
Scegliere di celebrare l’Expo 2030 a Roma vuol dire scegliere tutto questo.
Uno dei più grandi intellettuali di tutti i tempi, Wolfgang Goethe, ha scritto che, a Roma, “si riallaccia l'intera storia del mondo”.

Good afternoon everyone, thank you for being here.

I am very happy to have welcomed the Maltese Prime Minister, Robert Abela, to Palazzo Chigi today. This meeting concretises our work to boost the already very strong relations between Italy and Malta, two European nations, two Mediterranean nations, two nations facing many issues in common and that have extremely solid relations from a historical point of view, from an economic point of view, from a cultural point of view. Boosting our relationship is supported by alignment on many issues on the political agenda.

Prime Minister Abela and I have very often found ourselves at European Council meetings supporting common positions in defending our mutual national interests, but also regarding European dynamics - I am thinking of the issue of irregular migration flows; I am thinking of the opportunity, which is necessary, to continue to work together, especially in view of the next European Council meeting.

We intend to strengthen bilateral dialogue, at a political level and at a technical level, on a number of issues that are of key importance for our nations’ future: I mentioned migration but another fundamental issue is undoubtedly energy. The role of a nation like Malta in our strategic project to become an energy hub for Europe is clearly a crucial one; we are therefore working and discussing together with regard to the connection infrastructure needed between our nations and particularly in the relationship with North Africa. We have spoken about Tunisia and Libya, nations with whom we have frequent relations.

We are also convinced that renewed cooperation can further increase the interconnection between our economic systems: +10% in 2022 compared with the previous year, which is a figure we want to consider a spur to move forward in our relationship.

We have also made important progress on a number of historical issues regarding our bilateral relationship. We have agreed that, in order to improve this scenario, it is important to define the maritime borders of the respective exclusive economic zones: a long-standing issue that both are willing to take steps on in order to solve it. We believe this can be deeply strategic for our relations.

We have been working together in the energy sector for a long time, also thanks to the capabilities of Italian companies and our interconnections, especially regarding the Mediterranean and in the relationship with the European Union. Infrastructure is the main issue, in relation to which stronger cooperation and joint work can undoubtedly be extremely useful for everyone, for the future, for European supplies, for energy diversification, for energy security. Gas, hydrogen, renewable energies are therefore all issues we are working on together.
With regard to defence, we would like to strengthen our cooperation, which has so far given us a lot of satisfaction. As you know, the Maltese Archipelago is home to the longest running mission in the history of the Italian armed forces in the field of defence: this year marks 50 years of activity. This is therefore another matter on which our cooperation is very strong.

With regard to immigration, we have above all discussed the upcoming European Council meeting. We have agreed, and agree, on the fact that, without adequate defence of the European Union’s external borders, it is much more difficult to talk about secondary movements: the challenge is to work together on primary movements in order to also resolve the long-standing matter of secondary movements. From this point of view, we have worked with Prime Minister Abela to somewhat change the paradigm of these years of the European Commission. This issue is clearly not just about the security approach. We agree on the fact that investment and cooperation with African countries, in order to offer alternatives to illegal migration, is a key point of this work.
I have updated the Prime Minister on the recent European mission to Tunisia with President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Rutte. I believe adopting a joint declaration with President Saied was an excellent result, necessary to try and quickly reach a joint agreement between Tunisia and the European Union; we are very satisfied with the work we have done.

With regard to the economy and, again, issues regarding Europe – and I shall come to a close – we have also discussed the forthcoming reforms of the Stability and Growth Pact, the need to defend the strategic investments required by Europe and to take them into consideration in the new governance rules. This is another issue on which we can certainly work together.

We are also important allies with regard to international issues and support for Ukraine, which is never in question here.

I am very satisfied with the relationship that Prime Minister Abela and I have managed to build. It strengthens the already very solid relations between Italy and Malta and I trust we will do even better in the future.
