President Meloni’s statement on 15th anniversary of L’Aquila earthquake

6 Aprile 2024

Today, Italy pays tribute to the 309 victims of the earthquake of 6 April 2009, standing in solidarity with the community of L’Aquila and the Abruzzo Region, with those who lost their loved ones that night and with all those who have contributed to the city’s rebirth with such tenacity and determination.

L’Aquila is a model in terms of how the State responded, from management of the emergency and reconstruction work through to the regeneration of recent years, the first effects of which are beginning to be seen. My thoughts are with the many people who have provided their contribution, in various capacities and at different stages: the Italians who showed such great solidarity and support; the volunteers who sprang into action in the following days and months; the men and women from both the public and the private sphere who, with selflessness and commitment, have helped with this reconstruction, which has become an example.

The Government is committed to providing ever greater certainty for L’Aquila and the other municipalities that were affected by the 2009 earthquake. With our first budget law, we allocated the resources needed by the local authorities, with a long-term vision and like never before. We have also simplified legislation on public reconstruction work, released the funds to complete the rebuilding of schools and found the funding to complete L’Aquila’s municipal theatre.

We will continue to pursue our commitment, paying great attention to the city and inner areas; this strong and proud region has shown great dignity at the most difficult of times. I send a warm embrace to the communities who gathered in collective mourning at last night’s torchlight procession, renewing the ritual of remembrance. The rebirth of L’Aquila is the rebirth of a part of ourselves. Fifteen years ago we were wounded, but we were able to pick ourselves up again and come back stronger.
