Statement by Palazzo Chigi on Houthi attacks in the Red Sea

12 Gennaio 2024

Italy firmly condemns the repeated Houthi attacks on merchant vessels in the Red Sea and confirms its strong support for the right of free and safe navigation, in line with international law. In the face of unacceptable Houthi behavior, Italy supports the operations of allied nations, which have the right to defend their vessels, in the interest of global trade flows and humanitarian assistance.

Italy welcomes the passage of UN Security Council Resolution 2722 (2024) on January 10, 2024 and fully supports the efforts of UN member states to ensure free and safe navigation in the waters of the Red Sea.

Repeated violations of the arms embargo established by Resolution 2216 (2016) are to be condemned, and we appeal to all the member states of the United Nations to ensure that the restrictions imposed are respected.

It is essential to ensure the security of the Red Sea by preventing and countering destabilization actions that are not in the interest of either local actors or the international community.
It is crucial to avoid further raising the level of tension in the region.
