Foibe massacres and Istria–Rijeka-Dalmatia exodus: meeting of coordination committee for remembrance day commemorations

10 Gennaio 2024

A meeting of the committee in charge of coordinating commemorations of the day of remembrance for the victims of the Foibe massacres and the exodus from Istria, Rijeka and Dalmatia was held at Palazzo Chigi this afternoon. Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Alfredo Mantovano opened today’s meeting of the Committee, which was established by Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, providing a summary of the work it has carried out so far, ahead of 10 February.

Undersecretary of State Mantovano thanked all the State administrations and associations involved in preserving the memory and raising awareness of the tragedy of the Foibe massacres and the Istria-Rijeka-Dalmatia exodus, and announced that Palazzo Chigi’s main façade will be lit up with the Italian tricolour and the words “Io ricordo” [I remember”] to mark the Day of Remembrance. This initiative is of particular importance this year, as it has been twenty years since the law establishing the national Day of Remembrance was approved.

During the meeting, which was chaired by the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Carlo Deodato, representatives of the Ministries, associations, organisations, committees and foundations forming part of the Committee presented the projects, initiatives and celebrations being planned for 10 February, which will be included in a calendar soon to be published on the Government’s official website
