Statement by President Meloni on International Day Of Persons With Disabilities

3 Dicembre 2023

On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Government confirms its utmost commitment to ensuring that people with disabilities have the full right to an autonomous and independent life.
We are working to transpose and fully implement the United Nations Convention of 13 December 2006 and to put the individual at the heart of every policy, allowing them to live and participate in social life on an equal basis with others. The Government is carrying out an ambitious reform that changes the approach to disability, simplifies procedures and cuts red tape, making life easier for people with disabilities and their families, and introduces the individual and personalised ‘life plan’. The aim is to move beyond the current fragmentation and provision of single services, to build a coordinated and synergistic path to accompany people into adult life. This is an ambitious challenge and we intend to succeed together with all those who work in various capacities to care for persons with disabilities, starting with regional authorities, municipalities, local organisations, associations, public and private operators and the third sector. We still have a long way to go together, but the direction is set and we intend to pursue it with perseverance and determination.
