President Meloni’s statement on day of remembrance for military and civilian personnel who have lost their lives on international peacekeeping missions

12 Novembre 2023

On the day of remembrance for military and civilian personnel who have lost their lives on international peacekeeping missions, the Government pays due and grateful homage to all compatriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice in operational theatres where Italy is engaged in defending freedom, peace and security.

12 November 2003 is a date that will forever remain etched in our national memory. The Italian people will never forget what happened in Nasiriya twenty years ago: the most serious terrorist attack ever suffered by Italy on an international peacekeeping mission in a crisis area. The images from that dramatic day are still vivid in our minds as is the deep emotion that was felt by the whole nation following the attack, with Italy paying tribute to the heroes of Nasiriya with very strong feelings of affection and gratitude.

Remembering the fallen is above all a duty towards the younger generations, ensuring that, through remembrance, they can learn about and admire the example of those who have given their lives to build peace.

Today’s anniversary is an opportunity to once again express the Government’s pride in the men and women of the Armed Forces and the civilian personnel involved in peacekeeping missions, whose commitment, dedication and professionalism honour the Tricolour every day.

The Government’s thoughts are especially with compatriots serving in the most complex theatres who, in light of the recent events at international level, are having to face extremely critical situations, taking on great risks and responsibilities.
