30 Ottobre 2023

The President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni continues to stay in close contact with key heads of state and government of allied nations and leaders of the countries most affected by the ongoing deep crisis in the Middle East region.
This afternoon, the Prime Minister had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Al Sudani.

In the course of the conversation, President Meloni congratulated her interlocutor on the results achieved in his first year of government that have led to a strengthened stability of Iraq.

In the in-depth exchange of views, the latest developments in the crisis in Gaza were addressed, and the Prime Minister reaffirmed Italy's willingness to contribute to the security of the region by involving all relevant actors so that an extension of the conflict is avoided. The conflict  must absolutely not spread to the rest of the region, and Iraq, Meloni said, plays a crucial role in this context.

The conversation was therefore an opportunity to reiterate Italy's position and in particular the need for the immediate release of hostages and the creation of humanitarian pauses to support the civilian population in Gaza. In this context, President Meloni briefed her interlocutor on the Italian humanitarian aid that arrived today via Egypt in support of the civilian population in Gaza.

The two Leaders stressed the importance of maintaining coordination on the development of the crisis in the coming weeks, and also agreed on the need to continue to consolidate the work carried out in recent months to revitalize bilateral relations, deepening the partnership in all areas.
