President Meloni’s statement on ten-year anniversary of Lampedusa shipwreck

It is with deep emotion that we today remember the tragic Lampedusa shipwreck ten years ago, which claimed the lives of 368 people. There have since been too many such tragedies involving people trying to reach Europe’s shores, and it is our clear duty to bring an end to this continual carnage, also by blocking the departure of makeshift boats.
The Italian Government’s efforts to break up the horrendous business of human trafficking will continue unabated, also in the name of all the victims who have lost their lives at sea.
