‘Ukraine electricity emergency’ working group meets at Palazzo Chigi

11 Gennaio 2023

The ‘Ukraine electricity emergency’ working group, which was desired by President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni and has already been operational since the beginning of December, met this morning at Palazzo Chigi.
The working group, coordinated by Undersecretaries of State Alfredo Mantovano and Giovanbattista Fazzolari, is attended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, together with the Civil Protection Department and Terna, Italy’s national electricity grid operator.

The group’s work, now at a particularly advanced stage, focuses on coordinating initiatives to support Ukraine specifically with regard to the electricity shortages being endured by the people as a result of the ongoing conflict and the serious destruction of infrastructure caused by the bombings.
During today’s meeting, the list of equipment and materials available from major electricity sector operators was defined, together with the logistical arrangements for the next, imminent shipment.
These efforts will have a significant impact, considering that the material being donated by the Italian Government could contribute to guaranteeing the power supply for a community of approximately three million people.
