The Woodland Landscape Room and Marine Landscape Room

Next to the ‘Golden Drawing Room’ on Palazzo Chigi’s second piano nobile are two rooms frescoed by the French painter Adrien Manglard.
One is frescoed with marine landscapes, the other with woodland scenes.

The current appearance of the ‘Sala dei Paesaggi Boscosi’ [‘Woodland Landscape Room’] dates back to the 1920s: following the damage caused by the 1915 Avezzano earthquake, two of the doors were bricked up and the walls were decorated by Giorgio Sernicoli in keeping with those already present – with cypress and pine trees standing on rocky spurs.

The ceiling still features its original decoration, depicting cherubs dancing in a cloudy sky above the banisters of a terrace. In the corners, oval frames surround monochrome paintings representing the Arts.

The ‘Sala delle Marine’ [‘Marine Landscape Room’] is the official dining room of the President of the Council of Ministers, and is where he/she receives Italian and foreign guests invited for meals at Palazzo Chigi.

Trompe l'oeil architectural details frame the doors and windows, leaving ample space for the scenes of ports, beaches and cliffs, with various atmospheric effects, that bring the walls to life. In fact, it is possible to admire the passing of time, from daylight to dusk, that each day brings.
