President Meloni: commitments following Tuscany flooding met; ongoing efforts to provide affected citizens and businesses with concrete solutions

25 March 2024

The Government has submitted an amendment to the new NRRP decree-law (Decree Law no. 19/2023), in order to allocate EUR 66 million to the ongoing reconstruction work in the Tuscan municipalities hit by the flooding in November 2023. These resources will be used to implement immediate economic support measures for the economic and social fabric, helping the local population, businesses and manufacturers that were directly affected by the floods to deal with their most pressing needs.

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had announced this amendment during the signing ceremony for the Cohesion Agreement with the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, on March 13th.

“This was a promise we made to the citizens of Tuscany, announcing it at the Cohesion Agreement signing ceremony, and we want to deliver on it”, stated President Meloni.

The new resources will be in addition to those the Government already earmarked for the emergency in Tuscany in November and December last year, which amounted to EUR 189.7 million: EUR 100 million as a SIMEST grant to compensate for the direct material damages suffered by export companies in the affected areas; EUR 6 million for the damages incurred by agriculture enterprises; EUR 50 million to help recover production capacity; EUR 25 million to organise and provide rescue operations and assistance for the local population and to restore the functionality of public services and strategic network infrastructure as well as for other civil protection work; EUR 3.7 million for Lucca and Massa Carrara; EUR 5 million for work in Livorno, Pisa, Prato, Pistoia and Florence.

Through this amendment, the Government will increase the resources to support the affected areas in Tuscany to EUR 255.7 million.

“We will keep working to provide citizens and businesses that suffered serious damage during the flooding with increasingly effective and concrete solutions”, concluded President Meloni.
