PM Draghi’s message on the third anniversary of the Morandi Bridge collapse in Genoa

14 Agosto 2021

"Three years on from the collapse of Genoa’s Morandi Bridge, I would like to express my deepest sympathy and that of the Government to the relatives of the 43 victims, to all the people who were injured and to those who are still suffering the consequences of that traumatic event.

I do not wish to go into the relative legal proceedings, which will run their due course. I am also aware that no message can ever bring back your loved ones nor take away your pain or the entire city’s suffering.

I nevertheless want to reaffirm the Government’s commitment to ensuring that such tragic and distressing events never happen again. In Genoa, the State betrayed people’s trust in institutions. As the Morandi Bridge collapsed, so did the very foundations of civilised living, which form the basis of our society.

Completion of the San Giorgio Viaduct represents a first step towards restoring this relationship. We must make forward-looking plans, build quickly and attentively and carry out careful maintenance work. For this, I wish to thank the Mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci, President of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, Senator for life Renzo Piano and all those who were involved in this construction project".
