MedOr Project: inaugural meeting of the Strategic Committee held at Palazzo Chigi

3 December 2024

LAUNCH OF THE MEDOR PROJECT: LEONARDO FOUNDATION BECOMES ‘FOUNDATION FOR ITALY’, TEAMING UP IN THE INTEREST OF ITALY

The inaugural meeting of the Strategic Committee for the Meloni Government’s new MedOr Project was held at Palazzo Chigi today. The project involves the Leonardo Foundation becoming a ‘Foundation for Italy’, with the aim of teaming up in the interest of the nation. The MedOr Foundation has strengthened its mission through the direct involvement of key companies in which the Italian State holds an interest (CDP, Enel, Eni, Fs, Fincantieri, Poste Italiane, Snam, and Terna), in order to play an increasingly proactive role in supporting Italy’s soft power.

The Strategic Committee, whose inaugural meeting today was chaired by Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Alfredo Mantovano and attended by the top managers of the companies involved and the Foundation’s Chairman Marco Minniti as well as by representatives from the Ministries comprising the Interministerial Committee for the Security of the Republic, is a first in Italy’s institutional landscape. It provides a forum to exchange information, analyses and experience in a structured and secure way with the involvement of major players in the nation’s geo-economic sphere, which is vital to develop a truly shared strategic vision.

The Strategic Committee will also play a valuable role in supporting the Mattei Plan. The MedOr Foundation is already a member of the Plan’s steering committee, for the very purpose of contributing its analyses to the decision-making process for Italy’s new approach towards the African continent.

More specifically, the Foundation’s aims and objectives include: bringing together the skills and expertise of Italian industry with the world of academia and fostering public-private synergies in order to encourage and support geo-economic and social-cultural partnerships with countries in the wider Mediterranean region, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle and Far East and South America, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; developing initiatives and projects in sectors with a high capacity for geographical and operational interconnectedness, with particular reference to logistics, including integrated logistics, transport services and all other activities to develop physical, technological and digital networks; being a bridge and unifying force to develop structural programmes in the sectors of education and training, security, energy and infrastructure, healthcare and agriculture; encouraging and relaunching constructive dialogue among nations, cultures and economic systems with the goal of enabling Italy to showcase the best of its abilities.
