A meeting was held at Palazzo Chigi today to address the water crisis. The meeting, chaired by President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni, was attended by Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry Francesco Lollobrigida, Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policy and the NRRP Raffaele Fitto, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister for Regional Affairs and Autonomies Roberto Calderoli, Minister for Civil Protection and Marine Policies Nello Musumeci, Deputy Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Vannia Gava and Undersecretaries to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Alfredo Mantovano and Alessandro Morelli.
During the meeting, it was agreed to address the water crisis in the face of the ongoing drought by:
- establishing a steering committee at Palazzo Chigi made up of all the ministries involved, in order to define a special national water plan in agreement with regional and local authorities, identifying priorities for action and their adequate planning, also using new technologies;
- working on an urgent legislative measure containing the necessary simplifications and waivers and speeding up essential works to cope with drought conditions;
- launching an awareness-raising campaign about using water responsibly;
- appointing a special commissioner with powers to implement the steering committee’s plans.
