Statement by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers
25 November 2021
Afghan citizen Sharbat Gula has arrived in Rome.
Sharbat Gula came to public attention around the world in 1985 after a photograph of her as a young girl in a Peshawar refugee camp, taken by Steve McCurry the year before, was featured on the cover of National Geographic. She went on to symbolise the vicissitudes and conflict of the chapter in history that Afghanistan and its people were going through at the time.
In response to the requests made by those in civil society, and in particular by non-profit organisations working in Afghanistan, who, after the events of last August, have supported Sharbat Gula in her plea for help to leave her country, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers has made this possible, organising for her to travel to Italy as part of the wider evacuation programme in place for Afghan citizens and the Government’s plan for their reception and integration.
